Thanks for your comment folks !
wrt SARS, I found the following on the internet - I cannot remember
where or when, or whether it succeeds or not - please let us know.
(As usual, everything happens at Stellenbosch :-) )
"
*HOWTO: VIEW SARS PDF FILES IN UBUNTU LINUX*
This help is courtesy of the SULUG mailing list
<https://sympa.sun.ac.za/sympa/arc/sulug/2014-12/msg00002.html> at
Stellenbosch University. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) sends
all their electronic correspondence in files requiring the bleeding-edge
newest version of Adobe Reader to be able to open/read it, creating
problems for those of us not using MS W*****s. Follow the instructions
below to read your PDF files from SARS in Ubuntu Linux.
1) Open a terminal window and run the following commands:
sudo -s
cat > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/acroread.list << EOF
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu raring partner
EOF
apt-get update
apt-get -y install acroread-bin # accept the license, and don't make it
the default; get all the 32bit dependencies too
mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/acroread.list{,.disabled} # there won't be
any updates anyway
exit
acroread
2) Accept the Adobe licencing terms and conditions.
3) Open the PDF file from within Adobe Reader.
Note: The acroread-bin package is non-free software, which means that
the code does not comply with the four essential freedoms
<https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html>."
