[ubuntu-za] Which ADSL router?

There’s probably nothing wrong with your router, they tend to either work or not. There have been upgrades to Telkom’s exchanges around the country from ADSL to ADSL2/ADSL2+. The difference is mainly download and upload speeds. However if your router is set for a lower speed and you are working into a higher speed ADSL port at the exchange, you can experience dropped calls due to synchronisation issues in the transport layer.

When signing up to an ADSL or ADSL2+ plan, it’s in your best interest to see if the plan is ‘shaped’ (slowed down) when you reach your download limit, and if so, what speed you’ll be shaped to. Just because a provider has ADSL2+ at your local exchange doesn’t mean the service will always be available for you. Each provider is allotted a specific amount of ports for their customers at an exchange, and if they’ve rented all of them out you may have to look for a different service provider. Some dropped calls are due to capacity and high traffic problems rather than hardware issues.

Good luck.

I am a pretty happy user of a Netgear N300 using either CellC or Afrihost
WiFi.
