Its probably a combination of video card and monitor, but sounds
suspiciously like the Samsung monitors don't support unusual screen
settings - it's probably the refresh rate being set too high? Maybe because
the graphics card is not detecting the monitors capabilities correctly?

If you could see the screen, the randomness would probably be explained by
the error message it thinks it is showing you. :-(

Usually installers will use the lowest common denominator text mode, but
once installed will switch to a frame buffer (graphics mode drawing text on
the screen). The switches I sent through are supposed to do this, forcing
GRUB and the kernel to use the standard text mode.
Unfortunately I still think the easiest way to solve this would be to find
a non-Samsung monitor. Once you can see what is going on, you can change
the settings and then go back to using your Samsung monitor.
