In 1991, I was already an experienced Unix sysadmin and writer. I'm sure I
saw Linus Torvalds's famous Usenet message: "I'm doing a (free) operating
system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486)
AT clones," and I paid it no mind. Many people said similar things and
little came of it. This time, it would be different.
