A total freeze (i.e. Caps lock light stops working) indicates a kernel
problem... no userspace program can cause something like that.

Are you running any binary kernel modules? Do you overclock your
hardware? Do you have any BIOS tweaks in place? Is your CPU sufficiently
cooled? Does memtest for a day throw up any errors? What hardware do you
have in your machine? etc.
