I also see this behaviour.  A simple way to check is to do

$ transcode -y ffmpeg

Was export_ffmpeg.so linked with libdts.a?

Since I immediately needed to encode a file, I opted for libxvidcore
(shouldn't this be in the suggested packages?).  It doesn't work either,
unless you copy the file xvid4.cfg (from the transcode distribution) to
~/.transcode
