OK, now I get a menu entry, but still no icon. The desktop file contains the following:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=XBoard
GenericName=X Window Chess Board
Comment=Use an X Windows Chess Board
Icon=
Exec=xboard
Terminal=false
Categories=Application;Game;

Is it normal to have only "Icon=" ? Is there no icon available for XBoard ?
