Problem is that vlc creates a file instead of a directory.

[00000001] main private error: could not create /home/carl/.vlc/cache (Not a directory)
carl at cjfh5:~$ ls -la /home/carl/.vlc
-rw-r--r-- 1 carl carl 0 2008-12-02 08:41 /home/carl/.vlc

I did this fix:
carl at cjfh5:~$ rm /home/carl/.vlc
carl at cjfh5:~$ mkdir /home/carl/.vlc
carl at cjfh5:~$ mkdir /home/carl/.vlc/cache
carl at cjfh5:~$

     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
