I can confirm that the maxima_5.16.3-1 from debian sid solved the problem.

Tested with
plot2d(erf(x), [x, -2, 2])
wxplot3d(1/(y^2+x^2+1), [x,-5,5], [y,-5,5], [gnuplot_pm3d,true])
