I am using Libnotify. My computer at home has full Compiz enablement and
the show button does nothing. My work laptop has Compiz installed but it
stopped working a couple of weeks after installing intrepid and now I
cannot turn on any of the desktop effects by the "Appearance"
application ... and the show button does not work: not sure if this is
relevant - quite happy to try some experiments if you want me to
add/remove anything.

Just done a test and found the reason Compiz has stopped working is my
dual screen setup:

sudo compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present. 
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present. 
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present. 
Checking for non power of two support: present. 
Checking for Composite extension: present. 
Comparing resolution (2680x1050) to maximum 3D texture size (2048): Failed.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
