I don't think so. I've booted with an Intrepid 8.10 live CD. After
installing cryptsetup and modprobing the necessary modules:

# lsmod | grep dm
dm_crypt               21124  0 
dm_mod                 63432  1 dm_crypt
crypto_blkcipher       25476  3 cbc,dm_crypt,ecb

# sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 mydisk
Enter LUKS passphrase: 
Enter LUKS passphrase: 
Enter LUKS passphrase: 
Command failed: No key available with this passphrase.

/dev/sda5 is my root partition. Note that cryptsetup asks three times
for the passphrase. I know the passphrase because I can unlock the disk
with kernel 2.6.24.

As additional information, my passphrase contains non-ASCII characters
(e.g. "í"), but my keyboard is configured correctly.
