Success!  Thanks to this comment from a similar, if not the same, bug:

I disabled my unused onboard audio chip on my motherboard.  When I
booted into Ubuntu all sounds were working.  Even in Flash!  There is
definitely a bug somewhere in this whole mess, but I'm not sure what it
is.
