I managed to stop the flickering by doing that a while ago... however,
the hard crash of the xserver continued to happen.

I HAVE NOT experienced a crash since Milan Kvasnica's suggestion to add

Option "FramebufferCompression" "off"

Under the device section in my xorg.conf.

It has been 24 hours and the machine (ASUS EEE-BOX with Intel GMA 945
with an Atom processor) has operated without incident, so it is more
stable at the very least.

The screen used to shift periodically even with xrandr option disabled,
but that also seemed to have stopped for now.    I will report back if I
see the hard crash again.  My underrun was on Pipe A and it was not
possible to restart x until the machine was rebooted.

Perhaps the devs need to make the default for this option to be DISABLED
by default, rather than enabled.

Hoping my issue is patched for now:-)
