In intrepid I installed an older version from launchpad

amule_2.2.0~svn20080525-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
amule-common_2.2.0~svn20080525-0ubuntu1_all.deb
amule-daemon_2.2.0~svn20080525-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

and locked the version in synaptic to get PnP support.
