Had this problem again but now with the added information:

"[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop."

repeating in the Xorg.0.log file. Maybe because this happened when the
laptop was un-attended during the week-end and had been running  this
loop for a long time.

This is a very troublesome bug and seems to be experienced by others
with different drivers, see
