Are you talking about icons like on the screenshot attached?

If so, then you have likely enabled my ppa in your sources.list (the one
with the updated libcanberra) and your problem is not related to this
report. I had provided a patched version of fast-user-switch-applet for
personal use which had icons enabled but I did not yet upload another
version. If you want these icons back, please contact me and I'll upload
an updated version  (though I think then the issue with the status-icons
will affect you, I do not use them, so I did not test them yet).
