I had the same problem with paraview 3.4.0 running on Intrepid Ibex. The problem occurred when using the paraview 3.4.0 binary that I downloaded from the paraview site, and when I built paraview 3.4.0 from the source code.  I was running the nvidia v177 driver. 
When I downgraded to the nvidia v173 driver the problem went away.
