This one is confirmed for:
---------
apt-cache policy vlc
vlc:
  Installed: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 0
        500 http://se.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/multiverse Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
-----------
Intrepid up-to-date.
uname -a
Linux magnus-laptop 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Vlc does not crash, it just cannot open the stream.
Totem opened the stream without complaining, mplayer crashed a little before playing the stream.

Attached is the verbose output from vlc when opening rtsp://rm-
live.sr.se/broadcast/p3.rm, a stream from a Swedish radio channel.
