Hi. The situation has changed a bit:

I've upgraded to Intrepid. As far as I'm concerned, there are new gspca
drivers, and my webcam is not longer considerated a V4l device but a V4l2
one.

If I try to set my webcam (dev(video1) on vlc as a V4l device, I get a
repetitive error prompt in the terminal, and no image is displayed:

"[00000430] v4l demux error: failed capturing new frame"

If I try  to set it as a v4l2 device I don't get any displar nor any
error.

As I've read about the libv4l and gspca change as I've said before, I've
tried using the library preload I have to use with some programs (like
effectv). It this works if I do this:

$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so vlc

with libv4l installed on my system.

Some more info about my webcam:

$ v4l-conf -c /dev/video1
v4l-conf: using X11 display :0.0
dga: version 2.0

/dev/video1 [v4l2]: no overlay support


and about vlc:
