+ notify-osd can work when no compositing manager is present; this is the
+ case on a stock UNR install.
  
- notify-osd can work when no compositing manager is present, but assumes
- that if composite is present then a compositing manager is present.
- This is not the case when maximus is running (in UNR); what we could do
- for 9.04 would be to force the fallback to non-composite of notify-osd
- when running under UNR.  With an env var for instance.

+ We didn't see notify-osd so far as it was believed that it couldn't work
