Solution seems to be requiring a reboot after domain join, by adding to ConfigureLogin:
  /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required
  touch /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp

Will have to doublecheck if reboot is required after domain leaving (my
guess is no).
