Yes it worked after rebooting immediately after joining the domain.

...However, on first attempt the likewise domain gui crashed when
joining the domain (and in fact crashed before the domain join was
complete.  I re-ran and successfully joined the domain.   So I left the
domain, rebooted, put back all the files not restored on leaving and
rebooted again.  I then tried joined the domain using the command line.
This worked with no issue.
