I also had the same problem, with mythTV. I had constant hard disc
activity for nearly 3 days, before I checked to see what was causing it.

iotop showed mythtv-backend was the culprit, and I killed that process.
The disc activity stopped.

I use Ubuntu 8.10

GNU/Linux

Be very careful about using mythTV at the moment, it could destroy your
hard drive.
