Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The default settings in Jaunty 9.04 beta for this video card are
unusable, as can be seen in several bug reports (very slow, compositing
impossible). A work around I found myself was to use the 'Option
"Tiling" "false"', but the recommended solution is to switch to UXA.
Both solutions achieve the same framrate in glxgears: around 280fps. UXA
is better because it corrects many glitches in graphics rendering and is
completely stable for me.

Although this framerate is perfectly good for desktop, it is not for
gaming or other 3D tasks. This is the reason I would like to switch back
to XAA, where it was possible to play alien arena. I have read many
posts stating that it was possible in the past, but since the UXA
"solution" there seems not to be many of those around. So I report this
bug:

How reproducible:
Install Ubuntu 9.04 beta (notice how slow compositing is);
Try switching to XAA in xorg.conf;
restart the machine;

Symptoms:
X server fails to start leaving a awfull looking greenish screen;

Expected behavior:
X server should start normally.

Alternatively one may switch to UXA, but then give up playing 3D games,
using Google Earth, and such.
