When you load ASS or SSA file in avidemux, there is no effect...
I've compiled avidemux and there is the same problem, so I think is tue to a certain dev librairie like freetype or other.
In ubuntu 8.10 that's work perfectly.

Mplayer have a good support of SSA/ASS and work also in 9.04
I've attached an example with avidemux and mplayer.
