Well there are two ways of resolving the issue.
One would be to add an option in the game menu to change resolution, and like all recent games support 16/10 widescreens resolutions(1680x1050 , 1280x800, ...).  The different elements must be placed differently on the screen (wider borders) 

The other solution is not to strech to 16/10, like sdlmame does, it does
not require as much change as supporting 16/10 resolutions but it
doesn't look as nice because of the black borders on the sides.
