Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texmaker

Along the guidelines:
1) Intrepid 8.10 (i386), Jaunty 9.04 (AMD64) both fully updated
2) in Jaunty:
texmaker:
  Installiert: 1.8-1
  Kandidat: 1.8-1
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 1.8-1 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
installed locale: de_DE.UTF-8

3) Double-Clicking on a .tex-file in any nautilus window or on the desktop should open the file in texmaker, starting texmaker from any path with "texmaker /path/to/file.tex", "texmaker relative/path/to/file.tex" or other commands with the "-master" option or line numbers should open a texmaker window with the file.
4) Steps from 3) lead to the desired result, when working with files in paths without umlauts (may contain whitespace, see below); when Umlauts (äüöß) are contained anywhere in the path, an empty texmaker window pops open (no notice on the command line); exception: "texmaker file.tex" is called directly on a path containing umlauts.

Steps to reproduce:
1. create 4 subdirectories in a temporary location: "Verzeichnis", "Ver zeichnis", "Värzeichnis", "Vär zeichnis"
2. put files "test.tex" and "täst.tex" in each subdirectory
3. try "texmaker Verzeichnis/test.tex" in all combinations
Results:
(+)texmaker Verzeichnis/test.tex, texmaker Ver\ zeichnis/test.tex - opens a texmaker window with test.tex opened
(-) texmaker ANYSUBDIR/täst.tex - opens a texmaker window without a file
(-) texmaker Värzeichnis/test.tex, texmaker Vär\ zeichnis/test.tex - opens a texmaker window without a file

4. open the directories with a window manager (I use Gnome) and double click on the files
(+) test.tex in "Verzeichnis" and "Ver zeichnis" are openend in the new texmaker window
(-) in all other cases a texmaker window without a file opens

This bug is quite annoying, as descriptive path names may contain
special characters and files on this paths have to be opened via the
dialogues in texmaker. By the way: the same problem arises with cyrillic
characters (same as with umlauts).

For any questions feel free to contact me.

** Affects: texmaker (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
