I can confirm everything that Uwe said, especially the part about
highlighting multiple lines, which is a more precise description of what
I originally meant by slow. My files are small and size doesn't seem to
matter.

It seems that changing fonts somewhat changes the speed, although it
could be subjective - lag is present in all cases, but I think it's less
with Liberation Mono and a bit better still with Tahoma and definitely
the worst with Courier New 10. I can also confirm that Kate works fine
on the same file no matter, which font is set.
