Maybe the system should back up fstab automatically (make restore points): cp /etc/fstab /etc/backup_2009_04_17/fstab
and then if a test at boot time reveals that fstab is empty retrieve and offer a list of restore points. Or wait till someone makes configuration changes transactional (with commit, reverse).
PS:
I'm sure the guy only had the best of intentions. Maybe it did not occur on his system and then we should improve our testing process, but please don't look for people to blame. Humans fail all the time, only we should design a testing process designed to avoid such errors.
