I think you're blaming the wrong component... I'm having the same issue with embedded terminal.

Try to reproduce it:

1) Start gedit, disable all plugins and close
2) Start system monitor
3) Start gedit and check CPU/mem stat (0% 10.2MB)
4) Enable the terminal plugin

It suddenly jumps to 15% CPU!
