This is expected to not work without a composite manager.  Assuming you're using Ubuntu & GNOME rather than KDE or something else, running:

gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
"""
to turn on Metacity's compositor should make video playback work for you again.  And will probably speed up rendering generally; there's no acceleration on geforce 8 & 9 cards without composite.
