Could you please try with the current brasero version from intrepid-backports?
brasero (0.9.1-0ubuntu3~intrepid1) intrepid-backports
(You need to enable "intrepid-backports" in your software sources first).

I am not familiar with 0.8.2, but in 0.9.1 the 5 buttons are all on the
left side, and on the right side there is the current project, separated
by a vertical separator, so it maximizes fine in my case.
