Thanks for your reply. While it is true that meld functions without line
numbers, the inclusion of them is "significant" and an important feature in
a tool used for diffing code. tkdiff for example, out of the box, includes
line numbers. It would be my feeling, and I think I could find many that
agree, that it is important enough that it should be pulled in, and I don't
see the down side in changing it from a recommends to a depends. That's
just my opinion though.

It is perfectly reasonable that Meld "Recommends" python-gnome2-extras - the
Debian Policy Manual says that
"The Depends field should be used if the depended-on package is required for
the depending package to provide a significant amount of functionality"

Showing line numbers in meld is not a significant amount of
functionality.
