Hello! I have a simililar problem, the diference is that in my case
Smplayer is in full screen and sometimes freezes without i do nothing.

Sorry but i have no ideas too, th strange thing is that i recently
intalled again Ubuntu and Smplayer and thats when this thing started to
hapen.
