I am using a toshiba with nvidia card, using the proprietary nvidia drivers on Jaunty. 
Compiz is NOT enabled. 
Same slow minimize and maximize effects; sluggish black frame animation. Takes an extra second for the desktop to be usable again. 

Using video, through for example, vlc ,is slow and choppy.

 nvidia details:

driver version 96.43.10
GeForce 420 Go

Hardy had no problems such as these.

curious X behavior on ctrl-alt-f1
first time I use it in an x-session, it first instead of changing to prompt, skips this and automatically brings up X again. I know this because X takes a good 5 seconds for it to be up again. 
the second time i try the  ctrl-alt-f1 combination, it works. Down to prompt.  ctrl-alt-f7 brings me up then again to X, after 5 seconds of blank black screen. Very slow.
