[Bug 293884] Re: window focus lost for unknown reason

I've been fighting what seems to be this bug since after my 1st ~6months
of using 7.10. I am now using 9.04, and regretting the update as problem
disappeared in 8.10.

I don't think its actually related to compiz as I just removed every
hint of it from my system using synaptic, and rebooted. It's not limited
to Firefox either. It happens with everything for me.

Anyway the problem for me occurs as follows. You click on something an
it doesn't loose focus. Subsequent clicks either act as if you've
clicked on the same icon, window, panel, whatever again. Right clicking
usually brings up a context menu, which resolves the problem, albeit
temporarily. btw. scroll wheels also retain the (unintended) focus of
the previous object.

Previously I could ctrl-alt-Fx to get a terminal and then crtl-alt-F7
back to X and it would usually correct the problem, but not always. It
doesn't work at all in 9.04. I would sometimes do multiple reboots or
logins and that would help, but I only upgraded yesterday and my
experience thus far with that is limited.

When focus has been stolen the following does / doesn't happen:
* alt-tab doesn't work
* focus can be lost by clicking with mouse or using keyboard
* you can still use most keyboard commands including alt-F4
* closing a window with alt-F4 will bring normal focus to the window/application behind it.
* The highlighting of icons/buttons when hovering with mouse doesn't work.
* right clicking anywhere will draw the context menu for the item thats stolen the focus, usually at the point where you clicked, but its origin can also be at the item itself. You can then left click outside the menu and resume normal operation, until it happens again about 30 seconds later. The only failing of this is it doesn't work when the stealing focus item doesn't have a context menu.

Any further info required to help get this fixed, then please ask.

Having said that I am about to try my last resort. Clean install using
the 9.04 CD I just downloaded. (I am going to resize my / first though).
