I have the same problem.

Host: Ubuntu 9.04 updated as of 12/August.
Guest: WinXP SP3.
Virtualbox 3.04

Tried with pulseaudio and proper drivers (from XP's cd) installed on
guest. Sound output is working well. No sound issues on host.
