The inputattach source in Debian (shipped in the joystick package as you
noticed) is newer than that shipped in Ubuntu; the Debian version
probably fixes all the bugs filed against inputattach in Ubuntu apart
from LP#299999.

You might want to wait a couple of days before continuing on this, a new
version of the package is forthcoming in Debian with a fix for a kernel
bug (see http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.input/8385).
