I tried Laurent's solution but had no change.
I also installed pdns-recursor and the associated changes to resolv.conf as instructed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/417757
This helped unusually slow web browsing, but made no difference to ttf-mscorefonts-installer
