Despite a complete re-installation and reversion to GRUB to enable familiar menu.lst configuration for multi-OS operation, I see that this bug hasn't been simply fixed via Update, so I must conclude that it's 'an ext4 thing', because it hasn't been a problem for earlier releases using ext3.
Shame, it's just another reason for folk looking to easily migrate from Windows and still access their correspondence with OpenOffice simply giving up in disgust.
