Public bug reported:
This is the same issue as Debian bug #555484. Posting here in hopes of higher visibility.

xmess seems to be the version created back in 2006. Active development
continues. Version 0.130 was available at the start of Ubuntu 9.10
development. Current version is 0.135.
xmame suffers from similar issues. 0.106 was the mame version released
in 2006. MAME is now up to 0.135. sdlmame at least hails from 2009
with version 0.132.
