[Bug 318017] [NEW] withvisualize filter option activated, vlc hangs when invoked with file name

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

filed by typing "ubuntu-bug <PID>" with PID of frozen vlc process.

when the vlc option "Visualization" is set to "Visualize filter"
(located in Tools > Preferences, Simple: Audio, or All: Audio >
Visualization) and vlc is invoked with a file name (for example, on the
command line "vlc my_mp3.mp3", or by double-clicking a file if vlc has
been set as default to open that file type), vlc does not open but hangs
and must by kill -9'd.

tested with various mp3 and flac audio files.  deleted ~/.vlc and
started with default settings.  this option triggers a hang with invoked
with a file name.

when not invoked with a file name argument (for example, on the command
line "vlc", or by starting from Applications > Sound and Video), vlc
will open fine.  also, after an audio file is opened from within vlc, it
will play the file and show the visualizations properly.

vlc opens and starts playing the media, and displays the visualization

4) What happened instead:
vlc does not open, but hangs, kill -9 is required.


i have tried running a backtrace, but i get to the part in the wiki where it says "If the program hangs but doesn't crash you can press ctrl+c in gdb while the program is frozen and then continue with the next step."  however, i have pressed ^C but i am not returned to a gdb prompt and cannot continue with the next step.
