Public bug reported:

Hello,
This is my first bug report. I hope this is the right area to enter the info.
I installed 8.10 on my Dell D620 Laptop with intel graphics card.
I am running docked with lid closed.
My external monitor will handle 1680x1050.

I had installed the backported drivers as recommended in Bug 278259.
I could then use.

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050

To set the correct resolution. I had to do this every time I started up.

This now does not work. The only thing I can think of is that it's
related to me installing MPlayer. I have reinstalled the intel-gfx-
testing package again, but alas...no dice.

I tried the following...notice that my highest display is only 1360x768.
<terminal snip>
Generate Modeline
john at john-laptop:~$ gtf 1680 1050 60

  # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync

Then run xrandr with the mode line.
xrandr --newmode "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync

Now it shows up but does not belong to any of the displays.
john at john-laptop:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 1360
VGA connected 1360x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1360x768 59.8*

   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 303mm x 190mm
   1280x800 60.0 +
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  1680x1050 (0xd8) 147.1MHz
        h: width 1680 start 1784 end 1968 total 2256 skew 0 clock 65.2KHz
        v: height 1050 start 1051 end 1054 total 1087 clock 60.0Hz

Add it to the display
xrandr --addmode VGA 1680x1050

Now we can see it is added to our external VGA display.
john at john-laptop:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 1360
VGA connected 1360x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1360x768 59.8*
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
   1680x1050 60.0
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 303mm x 190mm
   1280x800 60.0 +
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
john at john-laptop:~$
</terminal snip>

It says my new mode is higher than my output now. This used to work 2 days ago.
Thanks in advance!

John
