looks like I fixed it by creating a file /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf
with the line:

options psmouse synaptics_resume_reset=N


to turn of the resetting behavior. This must be followed by rebuild of the initrd and a reboot

sudo update-initramfs -u
