Thank you for reporting this bug. As a possible workaround, you may try
the 2.7.1 driver in the x-updates respository
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/ .

For the sake of improving ubuntu (which is really what reporting bugs is
all about), it would be nice if you could test karmic alpha-3 to see if
the bug is still present there. If it is, we would like Xorg.0.log and
the output of `dmesg` for that. You may use the LiveCD/LiveUSB image for
testing. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.10/
