OK, I hope this helps someone who comes back to this bug...mostly
because each person who is helped by this will make me feel less stupid.
:)

Anyway, if you're having this problem on an Acer Aspire One, and the
modprobe.d info from Ralf doesn't help, try hitting "Fn-F7" (ie, hold
down the "Fn" key and press "F7".  It's a key combination that toggles
the touchpad, and I guess it gets saved to the Aspire's NVRAM or
something because it definitely survives reboots/shutdowns.

Watch out!  It's right next to the mute ("Fn-F8" :p).
