Marking New because I have had this problem since last year, and it
persists into 9.04. I have tried upgrading the BIOS from A06 to A15, but
with no change.

The symptoms for me are a complete lock-up, sometimes with blinking LEDs
for the panic. Possibly relevant is that gkrellm will sometimes Oops
rather than cause a panic if run with the i8k plugin, and messages
involving corrupted low memory appear in dmesg. Attaching a syslog of
two errors occurring in gkrellm. After a few seconds of the i8k plugin
working gkrellm either dies or the system locks.
