I currently have 4.4G free space on my / partition, quite recently
reinstalled from cd.

As I wrote this, I removed the .texmf-var directory from my home
directory, and that fixed it.

Which means something gets broken in the configuration between 8.10 and
9.04. Having a separate partition for /home, the old files got carried
over, and somehow broke it.

Thank you, isildur. I should have guessed, but didn't :).
