I can confirm this problem in Hardy. In case it's helpful, the English version of the error message is:
"[email address]: unable to encode Base64: overflowed buffer". 

I can also confirm Jan's suspicion that the recent libsasl security
update appears to be responsible. I re-installed the previous version of
libsasl and now mail-notification is working fine again.
