This occurs only with fixed media. No problems at all with removable
media - these work like a charm.

Right, this is probably "invalid" wrt thunar-volman.

What is it then? xfdesktop4, xubuntu-desktop or what?

What package is supposed to mount fixed media in xubuntu - preferably
vie the HAL pathway? Most likely it's thunar-volman, but I might miss
the point here....

Anyway: fiddling with fstab is for good reasons not an option. Plus it's
inconsistent with both Gnome and KDE.

Is there any place to look for some settings which could change this?
